Music can make an ordinary afternoon unexpectedly crowded. A few notes, and there is a bus journey, a kitchen, somebody singing the wrong words with complete confidence. We may not have thought about that day in years.
Sharing the song does not require a full account of everything we remember. It can be a small way of saying that a moment mattered, and that the person who was there has not disappeared from it.
Of course, a song cannot do every kind of talking for us. An apology still needs an apology. A difficult conversation deserves more than a carefully chosen chorus.
But not every connection begins with something difficult. Sometimes it begins with a tune and a reply: “I had forgotten this.” Then another memory follows, or a question about how life has been.
There is no need to find the perfect words for every hello. Sometimes we can start with something worth listening to together.
