Before You Feel Ready

The idea keeps returning, even after we have given it sensible reasons to leave. We are too late, too busy, not experienced enough. Still, it waits somewhere between the things we must do and the things we wish we might.

Perhaps it is a story we want to write, a class we keep looking up, or a small thing we would like to build. Nothing grand enough to explain why it stays with us. Nothing small enough to forget.

We imagine beginning as a moment of certainty. One morning we will know enough, have enough time, and stop wondering what people will think. Meanwhile, another ordinary week passes.

A beginning can be much less impressive. Opening a blank document. Asking about the first lesson. Setting aside an hour to find out whether the idea feels different when it meets real work.

It may not become what we imagined. We can discover that something is difficult, or not for us, without making the attempt a mistake.

We do not need to promise a remarkable ending. For now, we can give the idea one small, serious chance.
